What is the Civil Engineering Exhibition "DOBO-KORE" 2019?

What is the image of "TOKYO"? Many people will answer that it is a global city proud of the world's most advanced high standard of living that it is convenient, comfortable, and safe. But it was not so from old days. The Tube was open in London five years before 1868 when Edo-jo Castle was evacuated.

In Japan, 150 years passed since Japan aimed to joining to the modern nations after the Westernization of the Meiji era. Japan was faced with hardship many times including the earthquake, the war, and the disaster. However, TOKYO overcame them each time and evolved. The result of the effort of ancient people is still left in TOKYO--the subway which people can enjoy the town conveniently, the wide road which prevents the spread of a fire, the safe river which protects people from a typhoon, the expressway and the Shinkansen which change economy of Japan.

In TOKYO, the second Olympics since 1964 are held in the next year, 2020. It is existence of such "infrastructure" to support the holding in the back that we want everybody to know before the Olympics.

"The infrastructure" are always supporting the people's lives for 365 days 24 hours. Because their existence is too natural, isn't it rare that everybody is usually aware of them? However, each infrastructure constructed in different times actually make TOKYO function under the plan.

In Civil Engineering collection, many precious pictures, photograph, drawing and history documents which Civil Engineering world hold, and people cannot usually see are displayed and shown every year. This year, charm of the infrastructure with social background will be presented dividing the times into four zones, "Introduction / History", "Before and After the war / The daybreak of world city Tokyo", "1964/ previous night of Tokyo Olympic Games", and "Afterwards / to TOKYO2020" centering on two Olympics.

With the accumulation of the Civil engineering works that have been inherited ceaselessly from the past to the future, we are happy if you realize TOKYO which accomplished the change.

Story

Introduction / History

TOKYO was not built in a day - -. After the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the GreatTokyo Air Raids in 1945 to the present, what kind of change did the infrastructure go through? We look back on the 100 years of history of representative infrastructure development with the social background. In addition, please take in the breath of Civil Engineering with watching the aerial photo which enlarged TOKYO of the 1960s and the 2010s in approximately 4m square.

Before and After the war / The daybreak of world city Tokyo

It is the dawn that the basics of infrastructure appropriate for the modern nation are completed. Construction of serious infrastructure in TOKYO started, such as the construction of water and sewage, the opening of subway and the Toden, and the promotion of the river improvement. Pictorial record and the poster of the 1940 Tokyo Olympics that became the illusion are unmissable.

1964/ previous night of Tokyo Olympic Games

Ahead of the 1964 Olympics that are a big event, it was the times when infrastructure construction advances at a fast pace. Most of framework of the traffic to support TOKYO were completed in this time such as the Metropolitan expressway, the Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokyo monorail, Haneda Airport, and subway. Most of these infrastructures are used now, and the infrastructure of this time is the foundation for the Olympics in "2020".

Afterwards / to TOKYO2020

After the success of the Olympics in 1964 and the rapid economic growth period, it is the time when TOKYO accomplishes further development. It is infrastructure construction that increase explosively at the same time. The Metropolitan expressway is built into a a mesh of a net form, and 3 ringe roads are connected steadily. Furthermore, for the Olympics in 2020 and the next generation, the aging existing infrastructure is improved or updated, or remodeled to make people's city life more convenient.
